How Much Should a Networking Group Charge? Dues, Application Fees and Meals
What referral networking groups charge and why, with published examples, and a simple way to set dues for your own group from what it really costs to run.
Published October 9, 2026
The short answer: most referral groups charge three things: a one-time application fee, dues paid yearly or quarterly, and the cost of the meal or the room at each meeting. In chapters run by a national organization, published first-year costs run from roughly $700 to more than $2,000. An independent group can charge far less, because its dues only have to cover its own costs.
The three charges
- Application fee. Paid once when a member joins. It covers setting them up and shows they are serious.
- Dues. Paid yearly or quarterly. They run the group.
- Meals and the room. Paid per meeting or per quarter. Usually the group passes this straight through to the venue.
Chapters that belong to a national or regional organization have a fourth: the fees that go to that organization.
What published fees look like
These were checked in October 2026. Prices change, so confirm with each organization.
- AmSpirit Business Connections lists a $340 application fee and dues of $110 a quarter, or $375 for a prepaid year, as of January 2026. Local chapter dues are extra and vary by chapter.
- The Referrals Group says memberships start at $725 a year.
- BNI fees vary by region. One 2026 breakdown of US chapters estimates $539 to $699 a year, a $150 to $299 application fee, and $15 to $25 for each weekly meal.
Meals are the part people forget. At $20 a week for 48 meetings, lunch costs more than most groups' dues.
Set your dues from your costs
An independent group doesn't need to copy anyone's price. Work it out.
- List the year's costs. The room, if meals don't cover it. A website and domain. Software. A Meetup or other listing. Name badges and printing. Guests' first meals. One social event. A small reserve.
- Divide by the members you have today, not the number you hope to have.
- Charge meals separately, so dues don't change every time the venue's prices do.
An example. A group of 18 expects $3,600 in costs for the year. That is $200 a member in annual dues. Lunch is $18 at 48 meetings, or $864 a member, collected each quarter. A new member also pays a $100 application fee, which covers a badge and the time it takes to set them up.
Your numbers will differ. What matters is that every dollar of dues points to a line in the budget.
Why charge an application fee
- It covers real setup costs: a badge, a directory listing, the leader's time.
- It filters for commitment. Someone who won't pay a modest fee is unlikely to show up every week.
- It gives the group a small cushion when membership dips.
Say in writing what happens to the fee if an application is declined. Most groups refund it.
How to charge for meals
- Pay each week. Simple and flexible, but someone handles money at every meeting.
- Prepay each quarter. The venue gets a reliable count, and members who have paid tend to turn up.
- Include meals in dues. One payment a year, but a larger one.
Most groups cover a guest's first visit. It is the cheapest marketing a chapter does.
Yearly, quarterly or monthly
- Yearly is the least work for the treasurer and the biggest single ask.
- Quarterly is easier on new members and means collecting four times.
- Monthly only works with an automatic card payment.
Whichever you choose, give everyone the same renewal date. A treasurer tracking twenty different anniversaries will miss some.
Show where the money goes
Share a one-page budget once a year: what came in, what went out, what is in reserve. Members rarely object to dues they understand. They do object to dues that went up without a reason.
Collecting it
A payment link members can pay by card is the simplest way to collect. See how to collect dues for your networking group online.
On Ecoferral, a chapter can add its own payment links for an application fee and annual dues, and a separate page for meal money. Payments go straight to the chapter, and members never pay a fee to the platform. See how pricing works.
Questions
How much are networking group dues?
It varies widely. Published first-year costs at national referral organizations run from roughly $700 to more than $2,000 once the application fee and meals are included. Independent groups often charge much less, because dues only cover the group's own costs.
How much does BNI cost?
BNI fees vary by region. One 2026 estimate for US chapters gives $539 to $699 a year, a $150 to $299 application fee and $15 to $25 for each weekly meal. Ask the chapter you plan to visit for its current fees.
Should a networking group charge an application fee?
Most do. It covers the cost of setting up a new member and shows that the applicant is committed. Put in writing whether it is refunded when an application is declined.
Should guests pay for their first visit?
Most groups make the first visit free and cover the guest's meal. After that, guests usually pay for their own meal until they join.
Do members pay to use Ecoferral?
No. The group has one yearly plan. Members never pay a platform fee, and any dues a chapter collects go straight to the chapter.
