Questions to Ask a Cleaning Company Before You Hire Them

Seven questions to ask any home or office cleaning company before you let them in, and why a recommendation from someone you trust matters.

Updated Saturday, October 3

A cleaning company works in your home or office, often when you're not there. Trust matters as much as price. These questions help you choose well.

Seven questions to ask

  1. Are you insured and bonded? Insurance covers damage; bonding protects you against theft.
  2. Do you do background checks on your cleaners?
  3. Will the same people come each time? Consistency builds trust and better results.
  4. What's included, and what costs extra? Inside the fridge, windows, laundry?
  5. Do you bring supplies, and can you use products I prefer?
  6. How do you handle a problem or a missed spot?
  7. What's your cancellation policy?

Ask for a walkthrough and a written quote

A good company visits first or asks detailed questions before quoting. A written quote that lists what's included avoids surprises.

Start with a referral

Neighbors, friends and local business owners are the best source: they know how a company treats a home day after day. In a referral networking group, members recommend businesses they trust with their own homes and offices.

For offices

Ask about after-hours service, how they secure keys and alarm codes, and whether they can handle carpets, floors and restrooms as well as regular cleaning.

Questions

How often should I have my home cleaned?

Every one or two weeks keeps most homes in good shape; a deep clean once or twice a year covers the rest.
