How to choose referral networking software

Customer referral marketing and networking-group referral tracking are different tools. What a networking group needs, and the questions to ask before you choose.

Search for "referral networking software" and you'll find two very different kinds of tool. Picking the wrong kind is the most common mistake, so start there.

Two kinds of referral software

  • Customer referral marketing. Helps one business get its customers to refer friends: landing pages, reward campaigns, gift cards and sharing links. Examples include HelloReferrals, Referral Factory and ReferralCandy. Right for you if you want more referrals from your own customers.
  • Referral tracking for networking groups. Helps a group of business owners, usually one per category, pass referrals to each other and see what they're worth. Examples include Ecoferral and ChamberForge. Right for you if you run or belong to a referral group, a chapter-based organization or a chamber leads group.

What a networking group needs

  • Passing a qualified referral with the contact's details, in seconds, from a phone
  • Following it through to closed business, with the value, so the group can see what it's worth
  • Logging 1-to-1s between members
  • Attendance at weekly meetings, ideally without a paper sign-in sheet
  • Guests and visitors: inviting them, welcoming them and following up
  • A member directory and a website that keep themselves up to date
  • One professional per business category, protected automatically
  • Reports for the chapter leader and, with several chapters, for the organization

Questions to ask before you choose

  1. Who pays, and how? Per member, per group or per chapter? Do members pay anything?
  2. What does the free tier leave out? A free plan that tracks referrals but not attendance or guests may cost more in spreadsheets later.
  3. How do members check in? A leader ticking boxes, or members scanning a code?
  4. Does each chapter get a public website? Visitors look you up before they come.
  5. With several chapters, can the organization see them side by side, in its own brand?
  6. Can you bring your referral history with you?
  7. Who can see a referral's contact details? Only the giver, the receiver and their leader is the safe answer.

Where Ecoferral fits

Ecoferral is referral tracking software for networking groups: a member portal for referrals, 1-to-1s and points; QR code check-in; guest pages and follow-up; chapter websites on your own domain; and reporting across every chapter, in your organization's brand. It's priced by chapter, and members pay nothing. See features and pricing, or read Ecoferral vs ChamberForge.

Questions

Is referral networking software the same as referral marketing software?

No. Referral marketing software helps one business get referrals from its customers. Referral networking software helps a group of business owners pass referrals to each other and track the results.

What does referral networking software cost?

It depends on the pricing model: some charge per member, some per group or chapter, and some have a free tier for small groups. Ask what members pay, and what the free tier leaves out.
